The Waiver Wire: November’s hidden gems

The waiver wire is filled with hidden gems, both for the short and long-term. People who stay on top of the wire will reap the rewards. It’s always nice to have a streamer spot ready to pick up whoever is hot or in a good situation. Here are some players that have caught my eye – ownership is taken from Yahoo leagues.

  • Andrew Shaw (MTL – C, RW) 13% Owned

I didn’t think I would be recommending Andrew Shaw as a fantasy asset, but the truth is, he has fit nicely alongside Jonathan Drouin and Max Domi. Last week he racked up four points in three games and is close to matching last season’s totals.

There are some red flags here as Shaw is getting secondary power-play minutes and he has never posted more than 40 points in a season. He’s a streamer as he probably won’t be productive for the whole year.

  • Tanner Pearson (PIT – LW) 11% Owned

After only recording one single point with the LA Kings, Tanner Pearson was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Since the trade, Pearson has four points in six games playing with Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel. It really doesn’t get any better than that. Like the other forwards on this list, Pearson not only shoots but hits as well. He’s a great addition to any team in a banger league.

  • Alex Chiasson (EDM – RW) 8% Owned

The revolving wingers with Connor McDavid continue to change as Alex Chiasson is the latest player to be featured on the top line. To say Chiasson has not earned this promotion would be selling him short. He has 10 goals (which is third on the team) and has 12 points and 17 games.

The big red flag is his unsustainable 41.7 shooting percentage. Unlike the rest of the players on this list, he is actually on the top power-play which is a great thing. His career-high is 35 points in his first full season with Dallas, and playing with McJesus will easily help him eclipse that number.

  • Noah Hanifin (CGY – D) 23% Owned

Noah Hanifin’s a former fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft. Now in a different uniform, he seems to be thriving with Calgary. After recording two points in October he has seven points in 11 November games. He definitely has more offence than what he showed in Carolina and seems to be hitting his stride. He had four points last week and sees time on the second power-play unit. He’s only 21 years old and he can be very good given the right situation.

  • Sami Vatanen (NJ – D) 14% Owned

Since coming to New Jersey, Sami Vatanen has recorded 38 points in 77 games. Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but he’s valuable since he hits and blocks shots. Vatanen’s just coming back from a lower-body injury and might be flying under the radar a bit. He checks off a lot of the boxes that some owners will be looking for in a defenceman.

  • Mikko Koskinen (EDM – G) 26% Owned

There’s not many goalies that I can recommend, but with Cam Talbot struggling, it’s a pretty easy one. Koskinen is 30 years old and is coming off a 22-4-1 season with a 1.57 goals against average and a .937 save percentage in the KHL. He’s actually been very good in the KHL, winning two championships with SKA Saint Petersburg.

Even though Edmonton hasn’t looked great, Ken Hitchcock’s coaching style should benefit both goalies. If you’re in need of a goalie, you might as well take a chance.
